WiFi QR codes: connect with one scan
Print one code and nobody asks for the WiFi password again. Phones recognize WiFi QR codes natively — scanning joins the network directly, with the password handled invisibly and typo-free.
How to make a WiFi QR code
- Open the generator with the WiFi type selected.
- Enter your network name (SSID) exactly as it appears in your router settings — capitalization and spaces matter.
- Enter the password and pick the security type. WPA/WPA2 is correct for almost every network configured in the last decade.
- Toggle hidden network only if your router genuinely does not broadcast its SSID.
- Style it if you like — colors and a logo both work for WiFi codes — then download the PNG and print it.
What is actually inside a WiFi QR code
The code encodes a small standardized string — WIFI:T:WPA;S:YourNetwork;P:YourPassword;; — that camera apps recognize and hand to the operating system’s network manager. There is no app, no account, and no server involved at scan time: the credentials are entirely inside the printed square. Special characters in your SSID or password (semicolons, quotes, backslashes) are escaped automatically by the generator, which is a detail worth knowing because hand-built WiFi strings with unescaped punctuation are a classic source of “code scans but won’t connect” bugs.
Choosing the security type

Device support
Native support is effectively universal on current phones: iPhone since iOS 11 (2017) and Android since version 10 (2019) join networks straight from the built-in camera. Older Android devices handle the same code through Google Lens or any free scanner app. Laptops are the gap — most cannot scan a QR code to join WiFi — so for mixed-device settings, print the password in small type beneath the code. The code serves the 95% case; the caption serves the rest.
Where WiFi codes earn their keep
- Homes and rentals. A framed code by the door or on the fridge ends the “what’s your WiFi” ritual. For Airbnb and vacation rentals, put it in the welcome binder and check-in message — it is consistently one of the small touches guests mention in reviews.
- Cafés, bars, and restaurants. Table tents or a spot on the menu keep staff from reciting the password forty times a shift.
- Offices and meeting rooms. A code on the guest-network poster in each conference room gets visitors online before the meeting starts, without IT involvement.

Printing and placement
WiFi codes are scanned from close range — someone standing at a counter or sitting at a table — so a 2.5–4 cm code is plenty. Laminate anything that lives near drinks. Add a one-line caption (“Scan to join our WiFi”) because unlabeled codes get ignored, and place codes where phones naturally are: table height beats eye level in a café. Avoid printing on glossy foil or placing under glass at an angle to overhead lights; glare is the main real-world failure mode for close-range codes.
Security: what a WiFi code does and does not change
A WiFi QR code is the password, in machine-readable form. Anyone who can photograph the code can join the network and can also read the password out of the code with any scanner app — so treat the printed code with exactly the trust you would give a printed password. Practical implications:
- Point codes at a guest network, not your primary one. Every consumer router made in the last decade supports an isolated guest SSID; that is where visitors belong regardless of how they get the password.
- Rotating the password kills printed codes. A static WiFi code encodes the credentials at print time. If you rotate quarterly, plan to reprint quarterly — or keep codes only in controllable spots (a frame, a binder) so swapping them is a two-minute job.
- Hidden SSIDs are not extra security — modern tools see them trivially, and hidden networks are less reliable to auto-join from a code on some Android versions. Broadcast the guest SSID and rely on the password.
- Captive portals do not mix with WiFi codes. If your network shows a login/terms page after joining, the code will join the network but users still hit the portal. For portal networks, a plain URL code to the portal instructions is often clearer.
Troubleshooting
- Phone scans the code but nothing happens. Very old OS versions lack native support — install any QR scanner app, or check that the camera app has scanning enabled in settings (some Androids ship with it off).
- “Cannot join network.” Nine times out of ten the security type is wrong or the password has a typo — regenerate and re-check both against the router. The tenth time, the phone is out of range of the actual access point.
- Joins, then no internet. That is the network (captive portal, isolation settings, ISP outage), not the code — the code’s job ended at the successful join.
- Worked for months, now fails. Someone changed the WiFi password. Reprint — or accept this as the argument for keeping codes in frames rather than laminated to the wall.
Set up the guest network before you print
The code is the easy half; the network behind it deserves five minutes of router settings first. On virtually any router admin page (or its app) you can enable a guest SSID — name it something obvious and welcoming (CafeName Guests, not NETGEAR-5G-EXT2), because the name appears on the guest’s screen when the code is scanned and confirms they joined the right thing. Turn on client isolation (sometimes “AP isolation”) so guest devices cannot see each other or your internal machines — this is the setting that makes handing out access safe. Set a passphrase that is long but not precious, since the QR code types it for everyone; random-word passphrases beat character soup because the fallback caption under the code stays typeable for laptop users. If the router offers a bandwidth cap for the guest network, a modest limit keeps one visitor’s video call from starving the point-of-sale system. With that done, generate the code against the guest SSID and the security model is right before the first scan ever happens.
Deployment notes for businesses
A few operational details separate a code that works on day one from a code that works all year:
- Put the code in a frame or sleeve, not permanently laminated to the wall. Password rotations, router replacements, and rebrands all happen; a swappable insert makes reprints a two-minute task instead of a scraping job.
- Print a small passphrase caption under the code for laptops and older phones — the code serves the majority, the caption serves the rest, and staff stop being the fallback.
- Standardize across locations. Multi-site businesses should use the same guest SSID and passphrase policy everywhere so one printed design serves every branch; the batch workflow is unnecessary for identical codes — one file, printed many times, is the point.
- Date the insert. A tiny “updated March 2026” in the corner tells staff at a glance whether the frame holds the current credentials after a rotation.
- Mind where the code is visible from. A guest-WiFi code taped to a street-facing window grants the sidewalk access too. Indoors-facing placement keeps “guest” meaning guest.

- Yes — unlimited WiFi codes, no account, no watermark.
- Does it work for 5 GHz networks?
- Yes. The code names the SSID; the phone picks whichever band that network offers. Dual-band networks with one shared name behave exactly as if you had typed the password.
- Can one code join two different networks?
- No — one code, one SSID. Print two codes side by side if you run separate 2.4/5 GHz names or separate guest networks per floor.
- Do WiFi codes expire?
- The image never expires. It stops working only when the credentials it encodes stop being valid.
- Can I track how many people scan it?
- Not for WiFi codes — scan tracking works by routing through a URL, and WiFi codes are handled entirely on-device. Dynamic tracking applies to URL codes.
